The bright colors of these frogs serve as a warning to predators. There skin oozes one of the strongest poisons of the world. Tribespeople use this poison on the tips of their darts when hunting. These frogs get their poison from eating poisonous ants. The more ants they eat, the stronger their poison. They move easily on moist leaves on trees by suckers on their feet. Native people hunt the frogs and heat them over fire to extract the venom that they use on the darts to hunt. This poison can be used for up to a year. One species has enough venom to kill 1000 people. Most frogs lay hundreds of eggs at a time but poison dart frogs lay three to five eggs and carry they tadpoles on their backs.
